PANAJI: With the two-month fishing ban ending on July 31, Goa's fishermen are preparing to resume operations from August 1, though rough sea conditions and a shortage of labour are expected to delay the start of fishing activities.
Boat and trawler owners have already begun repairing and readying their vessels ahead of the new season, hoping for a productive fishing cycle after the annual monsoon ban.
However, local fisherman Siddharth Gaonkar said that while the season officially opens on August 1, most fishermen are likely to venture into the sea only after August 15 due to prevailing rough weather conditions.
Despite the expected delay, fishermen remain optimistic about the season, expressing hope for a good catch of mackerel once fishing operations commence in full.
The annual two-month fishing ban, which began on May 31, was imposed to allow fish breeding during the southwest monsoon and to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine resources.
