Floods wreak havoc in Pernem taluka, several villages flooded

Eight people were evacuated while 615 people were affected by the floods in several parts of Pernem taluka on Friday.

Eighty-eight houses were damaged while flooding was reported in seven villages as water began to overflow from the Chapora River.

The houses which sustained damages were in Ibrampur and Dhargal (25 each), Casarvornem (15), Chandel (10), Haspaur (5), Alorna (6) and Ozarim (2). Electricity and telecommunication services were disrupted in many parts of Pernem taluka.

Locals initiated the help of rescuing and moving people in small boats.

Floods were reported in Ibrampur, Hankhane, Chandel, Idus, Kasarwarne, Alorna, Talarn and Torsem as the Chapora river crossed the danger mark.

Many of these villages were cut off as roads were submerged, power supply was disrupted. Electrical appliances were also damaged after water entered the houses.

A farmer Ashok Dhauskar said since all roads were submerged, around 800 litres of milk got wasted as it could not reach the dairy society.

Almost all banana plantations were destroyed, while water pumps fitted at the wells were also damaged.

Deputy CM and Pernem MLA Babu Ajgaonkar along with several officials inspected the affected areas on Friday afternoon. Ajgaonkar also offered immediate aid to some farmers from his personal funds.

Ajgaonkar directed the officials to prepare a report of the losses suffered by people and assured to provide immediate aid after discussing with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

The Ganesh idol visarjan site at Rautwaddo-Agarwada was completely submerged and a house in the area also suffered a heavy loss.

Around 15 houses in Aroba, Shirgal in Dhargal panchayat face the threat of being submerged while the road has already gone underwater.
