Torrential rains lashing the ghats region between Goa and Khanapur has caused havoc in the region, with rivers and rivulets in spate due and contact to several villages in the Khanapur-Goa border was cut off.
Traffic on the Belagavi-Goa NH4A came to a grinding halt as the bridge on River Malaprabha near Khanapur was submerged due to the overflowing Malaprabha River.
Traffic on the Belagavi-Chorla Road too was disrupted as the old bridge near Jamboti on Malaprabha River was also submerged. Several vehicles were left stranded on either side of the bridge causing a traffic jam.
“Khanapur taluka is witnessing the 2019 flood-like situation as all the rivers Mhadei, Malaprabha, Haltar, Kalsa, Bhandura and Surla are in spate. Contact to many villages has been lost as road connectivity to these villages has been lost due to the floods. Authorities are attempting to provide help and support to these villagers,” a senior official said.
Parts of Khanapur town, Londa, Jamboti and other towns have been submerged due to the floods. The residence of Khanapur MLA Dr Anjali Nimbalkar too has been submerged due to the swelling Malaprabha River.
Meanwhile, the district administration has sounded alert to villagers downstream of the Naveelteerthu Water Reservoir where the water is being released since Friday evening.
