The Carnival floats parade at Ponda was kicked off by Ponda Congress MLA and former chief minister Ravi Naik, even as Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party leaders stayed away from the celebrations.

The float parade started at 4.30 pm and ended at 6 pm. It may be recalled that MGP leader and PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar had said that Carnival was not the culture of Goa. Over the decision of MGP MLA Manohar ‘Babu’ Ajgaonkar of holding the Carnival in Pernem, Dhavalikar had said he didn’t want to get involved in such government decision. Along with Ravi Naik, his Congress supporters, PMC chairperson Dr Radhika Nayak, Curti Khandepar Sarpanch Rukma Khandeparkar, deputy Sarpanch Shailesh Shet, councilor Irvin Soares, Vishwanath Dalvi, BJP leader Sandip Khandeparkar and others remained present on the occasion. The parade was flagged of opposite the

Menino hotel and culminated at Tisk-Ponda, near the municipality.

The floats parade wrapped up within one-and-half hour indicating poor response from participants. The Carnival committee failed to create a celebratory atmosphere as there was not much decoration seen on the streets. No proper arrangements for sitting were made. There was no proper barricading, which allowed spectators to enter the parade route.

Adding more woes, the accident motorcycles dumped in front of the Ponda police station were not cleared causing hindrance to the people.

The floats focused on social themes like ‘Save Goa’. Revelers hailed King Momo Jess Rodrigues, mythical king of carnival, with the chants of ‘Viva Carnival’.
