In a gesture of unwavering support for academic achievement, the Fomento Educational & Charitable Society (FECS) hosted an awards ceremony at Dona Leonor Memorial School in Porvorim on Friday.
The event, attended by Anju Timblo, President of FECS and Managing Director of Fomento Resorts and Hotels Ltd, aimed to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of students excelling in their studies.
Anju Timblo addressed the audience, underscoring FECS's commitment to nurturing talent and providing opportunities for students to pursue higher education. She emphasized the importance of dedication, discipline, and perseverance in achieving academic excellence.
“Fomento Educational & Charitable Society (FECS) is always there for the students who have a passion to excel and go for higher education putting their heart, mind, discipline, and hard work together. Scholarships, awards, and academics, along with prizes for sports and cultural activities for students to learn and excel in different fields would be set up and there would be more than one function in a year to celebrate the achievements of students. We would be there to support the students in achieving their goals,” assured Anju Timblo.
As the Chairperson of the Managing Committee of the Dona Leonor Memorial High School and the Porvorim English Primary School, Anju Timblo was addressing the academic excellence awards ceremony at the Fomento Educational & Charitable Society’s Dona Leonor Memorial School. One of the largest and oldest schools in the area, the school has 750 students studying from class I to SSC and coming from different segments of the society. Running for the last four decades, the school has seen brilliant students successfully completing their education and now contributing to various fields across the world.
Handing over the prizes to the meritorious students from class I to IX who excelled in academics, Anju Timblo mentioned that many students from the school have made good careers and lives after completing their education from this school. “We keep working and raising our standards and for this we will need to work together. The achievement could be of any student here. We need to make up our mind towards our goals and put in our heart, mind, discipline, and hard work to make it happen,” said Anju Timblo.
She appealed to the members of the society to collaborate, cooperate and participate in the journey of imparting education. Stating that this was the objective with which late Dona Leonor started the journey for education, Anju Timblo recalled her as a selfless, focused and determined person who even sold her house to start the school.
“Late Dona Leonor did all her education in the USA but wanted to come back to Goa and contribute to education. She met me more than 40 years ago to take me with her in this journey,” said Anju Timblo, remembering the initial years when the school started taking shape. FECS is a community initiative, building the future, ‘one life at a time’ through education creating productive citizens of society and the nation.
Anju Timblo’s association with the late founder of the school, Dona Leonor goes back to the time the school had started when the late Dona Leonor invited her to be a trustee of the Academy of Community Development and International Living. Since then, the association has grown in leaps and bounds, creating productive citizens for nation-building.
Underlining that those working in the field of education should work with sincerity, safety, discipline, hard work and a strong commitment, Anju Timblo pointed out that there are many who are responsible for the noble cause of education – that is knowledge, understanding and upholding the values to a greater goal to prepare the ground for a student to do the best in the world for himself and the community.
“We are never alone in going forward. We have to be together to do this and in the task all of us are included and playing an important role. Parents, teachers, principal, friends, neighbours, school management and the society, all are a part of this journey of education,” said Anju Timblo who values education the most.
The programme began with the welcome speech of the headmistress Bhavana Naik, followed by manager Arvind Kamat, who spoke about the progress of the school. Administrator at the school Sheela Jaywant gave vote of thanks.
The live flute and guitar played beautifully by Anslem Francis throughout the programme did not go unnoticed as it created a pleasant ambience in the open-air event. The programme ended with the national anthem left unforgettable memories, especially, in the minds of the little children who smiled all the way back home with their gifts.
