It was a dispute over sharing food that escalated into an altercation and the murder of 38-year-old construction worker John on Monday night. The Panaji police arrested the accused, Arvind Tiwari, 48, from Yog Sethu within hours.
North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said the incident occurred in the under-construction building at Bhatlem around 8:45 pm and was reported to the Police Control Room by contractor Nazir Mulla at 9:30 pm.
“Special teams were formed immediately and CCTV footage was reviewed, which led us to identify the suspect. The contractor confirmed that the person was one of his workers,” the SP said.
The CCTV footage, later released by the police, showed the accused fleeing the crime scene and boarding a KTCL electric bus amidst heavy traffic on the Bhatlem road.
The accused allegedly killed the victim by slashing his neck with a kitchen knife during a heated argument over food sharing. “In a fit of rage, he allegedly killed the victim using a kitchen knife,” Kaushal added.
A case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The Panaji police have also sought background details about the accused from their Uttar Pradesh counterparts, with the accused currently in police custody.
The police are yet to reveal the recovery of the crime weapon and whether the accused was in an inebriated state at the time of the crime.
