A full-grown crocodile which was lurking around in the fields of Santa Cruz for the last couple of months was finally captured on Saturday by Forest officials giving a sense of relief to locals.
Reports of sightings of the reptile had been doing the rounds in the neighbourhood and over social media since June and the forest department had laid a trap in mid-August. The efforts finally bore fruit on Saturday.
Range Forest Officer (RFO) John Fernandes, however, advocated caution as they have gathered evidence that there could be another two or three more crocodiles in the area.
The fields where the crocodile was captured are marshy and adjoin the water body at the Four Pillars sluice-gate.
Fernandes said the captured crocodile will be released in the protected area of Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.
Fernandes said they will continue their efforts to capture the other crocodiles suspected to be in the area.
