Noted tiatrist Premanand Loltikar has appealed to writers of Konkani in the Devnagri and Romi scripts to forget their internal differences and work together to promote Konkani language.
‘Konkani writers in the Roman script are not against the Devnagari script, but feel that Konkani in Romi script should also get official status. If both scripts get official status, there is no doubt that Konkani language will prosper,” said Lotlikar.
He was speaking during the presentation of the Dalgado Puraskar 2020 awards organised by the Dalgado Konkani Academi (DKA) at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall in Panaji.
“Goans going abroad in search of livelihood do not teach Konkani to their children. Konkani language is the identity of Goans and it is the duty of every Goan to preserve the language.”
“The younger generation should be told about the importance of Konkani and Goan culture. Goans should speak, read and write in Konkani and the language should also be used in day-to-day activities, while invitation cards for functions like birthdays and marriages should also be written in Konkani,” said Lotlikar.
On the occasion, the Dalgado Puraskar 2020 awards were presented to those who have done exemplary work promote Konkani language.
They included Fr Ave Mario Alfonso (Dalgado Sahityik puroskar), Fr Nevel Gracias (Dalgado Sanskrutic Puroskrar), Fausto V D’Costa (Dalgado Konknni Seva Puraskar), Amelia Dias (Joel D’Souza Daiz Puroskar), Enlidas de Elly (Fr Freddy J Da Costa Puraskar), Kala Niketan, Majorda (Dalgado Sanstha Puroksar), Sonia Gomes (Dalgado Tornato Puroskar) and Irene Cardozo (Berta Menezes Ostori purokar).
Earlier, DKA President Vincy Quadros informed the gathering that the DKA has undertaken work to publish the Konkani Dictionary and also books for KG1 and KG2 students in Konknni Romi script.
