Two former chairpersons and three former vice-chairpersons were among the 26 nominations that were received on Friday for elections to the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).
The total nominations have gone up to 30 including the four nominations that were filed earlier when the election process for 11 municipalities was kicked off.
Former chairperson, Sudhir Kandolkar filed his nomination from Ward 19 (general) while ex-chairperson, Sneha Bhobe filed her papers from Ward 14 (general).
Former Vice-Chairpersons Marlene De Souza, Prakash Bhivshet and Vijeyta Naik filed her nominations from Ward 8 (general), Ward 20 (general) and Ward 15 (general) respectively.
A seasoned politician, Sudhir Kandolkar, has been getting elected in the Ward for more than five terms and also got his wife elected from the ward when it was reserved for women.
“This time, like-minded parties and people from Mapusa have come together to bring about a change in council politics. The only aim is to bring about good development in Mapusa,” Kandolkar told The Goan after filing his nomination.
Ex-chairperson Sneha Bhobe had first successfully contested the council election in Mapusa in 2005 from Ward 11, which later became Ward 14 after the delimitation in 2015. She was elected as the chairperson of MMC in 2006.
Bhobe unsuccessfully contested the 2015 council election.
Former vice chairperson, Marlene De Souza, who is being elected from her ward for the last three terms, expressed confidence of getting re-elected.
“The anti-incumbency factor will not affect me. The people of my ward are with me and I will make it through this time too,” De Souza said.
The following 26 persons filed their nominations: Manguesh Harmalkar and Sitaram Kanolkar (Ward 3), Nalisha Carrasco and Shreya Harmalkar (Ward 4), Shashank Narvekar (Ward 5), Tarak Arolkar (Ward 7), Vikas Arolkar, Marlene De’Souza and John Lobo (Ward 8), Radesh Hasotikar and Chetan Korgaonkar (Ward 9), Rafil Shaikh and Shelvi Warang (Ward 12), Sikandar Sawar, Subhash Bhobe, Sneha Bhobe and Kedar Kamat (Ward 14), Antonio Alavares and Vijeyta Naik (Ward 15), Viraj Phadke (Ward 17), Ujwala Shetye (Ward 18), Sudhir Kandolkar (Ward 19) and Firoz Khan, Prakash Bhivshet and Deepak Mhadeshri (Ward 20).
