BELAGAVI: A pilgrimage towards Akkalkot in Maharashtra ended in tragedy when four Goans died and three others were injured in a road mishap near the Mosoba-Hitni Cross along the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway at Sankeshwar town in Hukkeri taluka of Maharashtra on Saturday morning.

According to Sankeshwar police, a group of eight persons were on a pilgrimage from Panaji to Akkalkot in Maharashtra, when the Maruti Ertiga car rammed into a truck from the rear.

While three persons died on the spot the fourth person died on the way to the hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Dhananjay Narvekar (45), his wife Matsyagandha (33), Girish Salgaonkar (30) and Santosh Naik (37), all residents of Panaji.

Three of them were killed on the spot while Dhananjay Narvekar, who was seriously injured, succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

Four others who were traveling in the car escaped with minor injuries and have been admitted in a local hospital.

Three injured persons have been identified as Shagun Naik (65), Archana Narvekar (5) and Sunanda Naik (50).

Sankeshwar PSI Shivanand Hittalmani told The Goan that Sandeep Naik escaped without any injury while the condition of the other three is stable. The injured have been admitted to a government hospital in Sankeshwar, he said. A case is registered in the Sankeshwar police station.
