PONDA: Supporting the move of their two main unions in the state, taxi operators from Ponda defied the Essential Services Management Act (ESMA) and took part in the day-long strike.
Maruti Taxi Association Ponda President Taluka Baban Sawant said they had kept their taxis off roads to press for a demand ban on rent-a-car services.
“They are affecting our businesses,” he said.
Around 120 taxis operate in Ponda taluka and are mostly stationed in front of hotels in Ponda and at other stands.
Though the taxis were off roads, rickshaws were plying in the city and made brisk business taking commuters to their destinations.
“We are ready to agitate till our demands are met,” said Sawant.
