Old Konkani melodies regale audience on World Konkani Day

Nostalgia ruled the roost as the audience was transported to the bygone era of Konkani melodies, sung by the creme of Konkani singers, on the occasion of the 2nd World Konkani Day, celebrated at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on Saturday evening.
Singing numbers sung by Goa's nightingale Lorna Cordeiro were Goa's Cielda Pereira and Shaistah Thapar, lending a rustic touch to the occasion were Ulhas Buyanv's melodies belted out by Siddharth Yaji, providing the Hindustani classical musical flavour to the proceedings were Gautami Hede and Shirish Lawande, the rock ensemble was Goatronnik Edwin Fernandes' contribution, while tickling Konkani patrons' funny bone were comedians John D'Silva and Kerry.
The opening dance performed by Nirvana set to the tune of Goa's Manddo set the stage for the evening. From Antruz came Cyril Ferrao, belting Chris Perry's 'Kityak Kortay Nokhre' from the hugely popular Konkani film of yesteryears 'Bhuyarantlo Munis.'
What followed was Gautami Hede's mellifluous voice with Ramesh Veluskar's poetic song 'Dolyant Tujhi Morpakhan' on her lips, while veteran Krishna Signapurkar sang a true lover's heartache 'Mog Tujho Kitlo Ashelo.'
Up came Cielda Pereira who shone on the Goan melody circuit with 'Nachom-ia Kumpasar' - the title song which had the audience swaying to her giggling rendition of this Konkani number. As Siddharth Yaji sang Siddhanath Buyao's feet-tapping number 'Rangaan Ranglo Shelo,' it was the perfect setting for Goatronnik Edwin Fernandes' entry with his rock ensemble in a new composition 'Yo Go Bai' which he followed up with Remo's evergreen hit 'Undirmama.'
Lending the Hindustani musical touch to the evening's proceedings was yet another veteran - Shirish Lawande who imitated veteran Pt Jeetendra Abhisheki, hailing Goa in his song 'Goemchen Naav Vhod Jau.'
After a host of melodies, bouts of comedy followed. K Signapurkar again with ths slow number 'Chandrim Udevn Aylo,' Siddharth Cota with a traditonal Konkani song 'Soyri Koshi Aylee,' Shaishtah Thapar with Lorna's 'Sopon' and Ulhas Buyao-Varsha Usgaonkar's duet hailing the Goa-Mangalore bond 'Manglurachya Sharant,' hummed by Siddhartth Yaji and Gautami Hede.
As the night progressed, Konkani melodies regaled the audiences. In the intervening period, Ravindra Bhavan chairman Damodar Naik felicitated John D'Silva “ the comedian of the Konkani tiatr stage.
