Residents of old Housing Board colonies at Baina received a major housing bonanza during the birthday celebrations of Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar at Sada late Tuesday evening, as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the ageing Housing Board buildings at Baina will be demolished and replaced with modern residential blocks.

He assured residents that every eligible occupant would receive a brand-new flat free of cost under the redevelopment project.

The announcement, made before a large gathering, was greeted with loud applause from residents, many of whom have been demanding redevelopment of the decades-old Housing Board colonies for several years.

The chief minister said the government is committed to providing safe and modern housing to the people while ensuring that existing residents are not displaced from the benefits of the project.

As part of the programme, Sawant also distributed sanction letters to residents of the Baina Housing Board colony, marking another step in the process of regularising and strengthening their housing security. The move brought relief to several families who have been awaiting clarity on their future.

The announcement came close on the heels of another major housing initiative in the constituency.

Recently, occupants of the Goa Rehabilitation Board (GRB) colony at Sada were handed allotment letters that would facilitate the legal transfer of their residential units in their own names.

With both the GRB regularisation and the proposed redevelopment of the Baina Housing Board colonies, the government has initiated two significant housing measures benefiting hundreds of families in the Mormugao constituency.

Addressing the gathering, Sawant said the government is giving priority to improving the quality of life of people by providing secure housing and better civic infrastructure.

He assured residents that the redevelopment project would be taken up by the government and completed in a planned manner so that beneficiaries receive modern homes without financial burden.

The programme witnessed the presence of public representatives, MLAs, ministers, BJP office bearers, government officials, local leaders and a large number of residents.
