Elvis Gomes, who till recently was a Goa Civil Service bureaucrat, joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday amid sloganeering, pledging to set the system right through rebuilding the system.
Gomes was welcomed into the party by Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia amid loud cheering by party men.
While the party didn’t admit it, by the look of things, Elvis is to be the face of the party if not the Chief Ministerial candidate going into the polls expected to be held early next year.
“The decision will be taken by the party and the people of Goa. We will announce it at a press conference,” Sisodia said when asked whether Gomes was the chief ministerial candidate.
Soon after taking charge, Gomes spoke of his motivation to join politics and the Aam Aadmi was the will to bring change.
“Five years ago, there was a lot of hope in people. But today, the frustration has reached such levels that I realised that we have to get our state out of this and if Goa’s future needs new directions, I had to take a decision to join, what I won’t call a party but a movement,” Gomes said.
“There were many options, but have accepted this option because we have to unleash the power of the aam aadmi and see that the administration that has practically crumbled, is restored for the welfare of the common man,” he added.
Gomes called all Goans to join the AAP with a move to bring change in the State.
“Everyone has the invite to join. We need more Goans to join the party. This will be a movement of Goans and to those who are saying that this is a party of Delhiites and outsiders, I would ask them how many parties from outside Goa have ruled the state so far,” he said.
Earlier Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia said that it was his personal experience in the few days he has spent in the State that the people are longing for a change.
“I’ve been in Goa for the past two days and have spoken to many people, influential people as well as the Aam Aadmi in Goa. The feedback is very positive that the people of Goa want Aam Aadmi Party. People greet me on the road and wish me in advance,” Sisodia said adding that he has felt the frustration of the people over the failures of both the Congress and BJP governments. “People tell me that the dismissed the Congress only to realise that the BJP is no different. Looking at the work done in Delhi and people are coming to support the AAP,” Sisodia said.
