MARGAO
Goans for Goa (GFG) has said that the Goa Chief Electoral Officer’s move to seek details from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) about Goans who became Portuguese citizens will be futile unless the government takes further steps.
GFG convenor Kennedy Afonso said there are five categories of such people. He said the government already has details of those who surrendered Indian passports after getting Portuguese citizenship.
However, people who failed to surrender passports, those who only registered their births and got identity cards, and elderly persons who registered only for their children’s benefit will not come forward due to fear of penalties.
Afonso said an amnesty period is needed for people to declare their status without fear of legal action.
