After having successfully checkmated PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar from playing any pre-eminent role in the coalition government in the absence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, all eyes are now focused on the G-6 led by Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai as the BJP has virtually set in motion the process for a smooth transition in place of an ailing Chief Minister.

Having batted for Manohar Parrikar a year-and-half ago post-2017 Assembly election, virtually leaving the BJP Delhi leadership with no option than to relieve Parrikar from the Defence portfolio to take over the reigns of office, the Goa Forward and the G-6 is believed to have conveyed its choice of candidate for the top post in the event Parrikar steps down as the Chief Minister on health grounds.

The Goan understands that Goa Forward and G-6 is believed to have rooted for a BJP leader for the top post, who is presently not part of the 14-member BJP Legislature group, but is a prominent leader of the party organization. Sources in the know said the G-6 is believed to have exuded confidence that this leader, if nominated for the post of Chief Minister, can get elected to the Legislative Assembly within six months, promising to get a MLA resign and vacate the seat for this leader to contest the bye-election.

Sources in the regional party pointed out that the regional party has expressed its reservations in backing Speaker Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, for the top post as a replacement for the Chief Minister. “For the moment, the regional party has conveyed its preference for a non-MLA for the top post in the event Chief Minister steps down on health grounds. As far as Speaker Pramod Sawant is concerned, it is not advisable to go in for a change given the dicey political situation staring the state”, sources in the Goa Forward said, adding that the leadership of the major coalition partner has not got back to the regional party on the leadership issue.
