The New Year brought cheer to the South Marine Range (SMR) as an Olive Ridley turtle laid 113 eggs at Galgibaga in the wee hours of Thursday.
The Olive Ridley turtle arrived at about 4.45 am and laid 113 eggs, before it returned to the sea. The eggs were later shifted to Pit 1 of the nesting site at the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (TRC).
Incidentally, Galgibaga TRC's Pit 1 with 113 eggs is the third pit after TRC Agonda received its first set of 65 Olive Ridley eggs on December 28 and second set of 107 eggs on December 29.
With all the three nesting pits, both turtle nesting sites at the TRCs in Agonda and Galgibaga are presently protecting 285 eggs.
The TRC Galgibaga Nesting Site, which is located at the Headquarters of SMR, had received its first nest of 150 eggs on November 16, 2023 during the last season.
The turtle nesting season normally begins in September, and the incubation period lasts approximately 50-55 days.
