MARGAO
The Gandhi Market Vegetable, Readymade and Cloth Vendors Association on Tuesday called on the Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Siddivinayak Naik and warned of a morcha if the civic body failed to placate the illegal vendors from the city’s footpaths and roadsides.
The vendors also demanded that the civic body clear the market drains before the onset of monsoons and also attend to the sanitation issues plaguing the market.
Led by Association President Rajendra Azgaonkar, the vendors drew attention of the Chief Officer to the illegal and unauthorized vendors doing business along the roadsides across the city at several locations including Sadekar lane, Bank of Baroda, Comunidade building, Caro lane and Bombay Café.
He pointed out that business in the Gandhi market had been adversely affected because of the illegal activities of the vendors and demanded action. He has also called for action against the illegal handcarts doing business around the municipal building.
Though the delegation did not serve any deadline on the civic body to crack a whip against the vendors, Azgaonkar made it clear to the Chief Officer that the vendors will be forced to bring a massive morcha on the municipality fails to take action in the matter.
The CO later told the media that the civic body would crack a whip against the vendors and clear the footpaths of the illegalities. He said the Association has assured of cooperation to put a stop to the illegal vendors in the city.
On issues connected to drainage and sanitation, the Chief Officer assured to look into the matter saying these will be cleared before the onset of monsoon.
