As there’s no stop to the menace of waste dumping around the border areas of the city “ right from Rawanfond to Mungul, Navelim to Dovondem and the Eastern bypass “ the Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai has invited sarpanchas of the villages located on the periphery of the city in a bid to evolve a solution to the burning waste problem.
Besides the village sarpanchas, the Margao civic body has also invited officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and Ministry of Environment to deliberate and discuss the burning issue and work out a solution that would rid the border areas of the city from the waste menace.
MMC officials said the civic body’s initiative with the door-to-door waste collection exercise has been negated by the continuous dumping of waste all along the border areas. That’s not all. While the civic body has been attending to this garbage, knowing well that the waste has found its way in the border areas from the neighbouring panchayat areas, the situation has been aggravated with the continuous flow of waste from the villages into the city.
The situation at Mungul, or Navelim behind the district library is not different. “The moment the Municipal workers clear the waste, one finds waste finding its way at the same spot. This has only compounded the problem of waste handling in the city,” remarked a MMC official.
He pointed out that the municipality had only recently cleared tons of waste from along the Eastern bypass, but lamented that waste has again surfaced along the bypass, brought by unscrupulous contractors.
Sources said the MMC chairperson has called for a meeting with the village sarpanchas, GSPCB and Environment Ministry’s officials to ensure that the government understands the problems.

Margao municipality does not accept waste from the neighbouring village panchayat though panchayat bodies such as Navelim and Rumdamol had in the past knocked the doors of the civic body to accept waste generated in their respective villages.
