The Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) has strongly condemned the reported use of force against resident doctors and medical students during the recent protests over education reforms, calling for a fair and time-bound inquiry into the incident.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, GARD said it was "deeply concerned" over the reports and visuals emerging from the protest, stating that healthcare professionals and medical students deserve an environment of safety, dignity and respect.
"The Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) expresses its deep concern and unequivocally condemns the reported use of force against resident doctors and medical students during the recent protests for education reforms," the association said.
Describing the incident as "deeply distressing", GARD said any act of violence against doctors is unacceptable and undermines the values of a democratic society.
GARD urged the authorities to conduct "a fair, impartial and time-bound inquiry" into the incident, ensure accountability wherever excessive use of force is established, safeguard the security and dignity of healthcare professionals and medical students during peaceful demonstrations, and resolve the prevailing concerns through meaningful dialogue and constitutional means.
Appealing to the medical fraternity to remain united, peaceful and responsible, GARD said it remains committed to protecting the rights, safety and welfare of resident doctors.
"An injury to one doctor is a concern for the entire medical fraternity. GARD reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting the rights, safety, and welfare of resident doctors and stands shoulder to shoulder with our colleagues during this difficult time," the press note stated.
