The Cuncolim police have decided to seek a report from the Inspectorate of Factories & Boilers before initiating criminal action in the ammonia gas leakage case in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
Sources in the know pointed out that the Cuncolim police have so far not booked any particular person or representatives of the industrial unit in question for the reason that they are not experts in investigating the technical aspects of the ammonia gas leakage.
Given the situation and coupled with the fact that since the Factories & Boilers has already initiated an inquiry into the incident, the police have decided to wait for the agency to complete the problem before initiating criminal action.
“We have decided to write to the Factories & Boilers to submit the report on its findings in the ammonia gas leakage case. Accordingly, the police will move in to book those responsible for the negligence,” a senior police official said.
The Cuncolim police have already registered a case under section 304-A of the IPC in connection with the leakage which had claimed the life of a 22-year old worker from Uttar Pradesh, who was sleeping in the accommodation of an adjoining unit.
However, it could not be ascertained whether the Cuncolim police will seek a similar report from the Labour
department or the office of the Labour Commissioner to find out whether the rooms, where the workers were sleeping, conformed to the labour rules in force.
