Christmas is a season of joy, but for many elderly of old age homes, it is often a quiet time. This year, Goa College of Hospitality & Culinary Education (GCHCE) run by Fomento Educational & Charitable Society FECS), took a conscious decision to fill the hearts of the residents of St John of God Old Age Home with warmth and laughter.
The group of 30 students, led by Principal - Dr Edgar Dsouza, Executive Secretary – FECS, Nivedita Srivastava, and Accounts Manager – Corporate, Dileep Verlekar, didn’t just bring good music & food—they brought companionship with genuine affection, carols and gifts. Each senior citizen was greeted personally, their faces lighting up as young voices sang familiar Christmas tunes. Guitar melodies by Alfwold Sequieira and student Shishir Thapa added soul to the celebration, while laughter echoed as the elderly joined in singing and even dancing.
The day was sprinkled with heartfelt moments. When the group discovered it was student Erica’s birthday, everyone—young and old—sang for her. Erica shared a homemade plum cake, a gesture that touched the hearts of the residents, reminding them of family traditions they once cherished.
Beyond the good music and food, the visit carried a deeper message of care. Fomento Educational & Charitable Society contributed a 10 Kg IFB fully automatic washing machine and essential supplies, while parents contributed hygiene items, ensuring the home’s daily needs were met. These gifts were handed over to Sr Celsa, who expressed gratitude for the kindness shown.
For the students and staff, the experience was transformative. It wasn’t just about celebrating Christmas—it was about making someone feel seen, valued, and loved. As the group left, the smiles on the faces of the elderly said it all: sometimes, the greatest gift is simply showing up.
