PANAJI
GenNext is set to make a mark at the Corporation of the City of Panaji as Panaji MLA Babush Monserrate’s son Rohit Monserrate and Mohan Agshikar are to be elected unopposed as Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Things became clear after the BJP on Monday morning cleared both the names even as both the candidates filled their forms for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
As there was no other claimant for the posts, the election of Rohit and Mohan is technically cleared as mayor and deputy mayor. However, the official declaration for the same will be done on Tuesday, officials said.
After having made a sweep at the recently-held CCP elections by ensuring win of 25 of his handpicked candidates in the 30-member Corporation, the Panaji MLA decided to make his 32-year-old son Rohit the mayor of the capital city.
Left with no choice after Babush proposed the name of his son, BJP had no choice other than to vet his decision even as the party settled for Mohan as its nominee for the deputy mayor’s post.
Rohit, a political novice, contested and won the election for the first time.
Speaking to media Rohit said that his primary aim will be the development of Panaji. "I have to fulfill my dad's manifesto. We have a very good team and will work for the development of Panaji", he said.
