Five persons had a miraculous escape after a speeding car rammed a scooter, a cyclist, hit an electricity pole and later crashed into a compound of a house along the road in Cortalim on Sunday.
According to information the accident occurred at around 6.30 pm near the Shantadurga temple along the Cortalim highway.
Sources said the Skoda car (GA05 B 7499), driven by Shreyas Divkar (27) from New Vaddem and had another occupant Tejas Govekar (26) also from Vasco, was in high speed when it initially knocked down an Activa scooter seriously injuring a mother-son duo -- Saurav Dixit (35) and Meera Dixit (61) -- residents of Vaddem lake.
After hitting the scooter, the driver of the speeding car lost control and later hit a baker Lav Kush Nayan (31), who was on his cycle leaving him also grievously injured.
The car later went on to hit an electricity pole, flung on to a tree and crashed inside a compound of the house along the road in the opposite direction.
The accident left the two occupants of the bike and the baker grievously injured besides another occupant of the car Tejas Govekar.
The impact was such that the leg of the driver was stuck in the car. He was later removed from the mangled remains with the help of fire personnel.
All the injured persons, some with leg fractures and body injuries, were rushed to the Goa Medical College by an ambulance and are undergoing treatment.
A medical examination of the driver has also been conducted to ascertain if he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
