GHRC takes suo motu cognisance of saline water issue in Korgao

PANAJI
The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report alleging that residents of Korgao have been receiving saline water through taps for the past year. The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary to the Government of Goa, the Chief Engineer of the Department of Drinking Water, and the Principal Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, directing them to submit their reports on the issue.
The notices returnable are on August 21. The officials have been directed to appear before the Commission either in person or through duly authorised representatives and file their respective reports on the scheduled date.
In a similar case concerning the water crisis in Arpora, in which the Commission took suo motu cognisance last month, it recommended that the Department of Drinking Water be designated as the sole agency to receive complaints and collect road-cutting charges, wherever required, in cases of water shortage.
“The Commission finds that the Department took steps and the water shortage issue of the residents is resolved,” it said while asking the respondents to submit action taken or proposed to be taken within 60 days.
