The knife attack at the women’s hostel of the Goa Institute of Management (GIM) in Poriem, Sattari, on September 5 has raised questions about student safety and security at the prestigious institution.
A 25-year-old student from Lucknow was allegedly attacked with a knife by a 26-year-old fellow student while she was asleep in her hostel room. The victim suffered injuries to her neck and cuts on her hands. She was admitted to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim for treatment. Valpoi Police have arrested 26-year-old Sukanya Sabbahani, a native of Hyderabad, in connection with the incident.
Police investigations
The injured student is reportedly in stable condition but remains admitted to the hospital. Police are expected to record her statement once her condition is considered stable.
Valpoi Police are recording statements from people connected with the incident and are trying to establish what happened before and during the attack, as well as the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Following the incident, the management has reportedly held a series of meetings over the past few days to review the existing security arrangements and consider measures to strengthen student safety.
Sources said the management is taking the incident seriously and examining precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The exact motive for the attack, whether there had been previous disagreements between the accused and the victim, whether the attack was sudden or pre-planned, and whether there were any shortcomings in the hostel’s security arrangements are among the issues expected to become clearer as the police investigation progresses.
Sources said both students had joined the institution only recently. However, the exact reason for the dispute and how it escalated into a knife attack has not yet been established.
In her complaint to the police, the victim is reported to have stated that the accused attacked her with a knife and later threatened to kill her.
Police are investigating several aspects of the incident, including where the knife came from, how it was brought into the hostel, whether it was carried with prior intent and whether there had been any earlier disagreements between the two students.
Management reviews security
