MARGAO
The Global Konknni Forum will kick-start its campaign in support of Konkani in Roman script titled “Amdarak Bhett “ Kodel Zai vo Romi Lilip Zay” on September 23, beginning with Curtorim independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco at the MLA’s office.
GKF President Kennedy Afonso said the independent MLA has given an appointment to his constituents to express their concerns and views regarding the "injustice" meted out to Roman script in the Official Language Act.
During the visit, the Forum will also present two bills to the independent MLA, demanding an amendment to the Official Language Act to include Roman script and to introduce Roman script in education. The bills will be handed over to the MLA with a plea to introduce them in the next Assembly Session.
The GKF has decided to approach around 19-20 MLAs of the Goa Legislative Assembly, cutting across party lines, which it considered belonging to the linguistic minorities, with a plea to support the demand for an amendment to the Official Language Act.
After the Forum launched an agitation in support of the long-pending demand for bestowing equal status for Konkani in Roman script, gram sabhas of several village Panchayats across the state have adopted resolutions in support of the demand.
Some of the village panchayats have already forwarded these resolutions to the Commissioner, Linguistic Minorities Delhi with a plea to give equal status to Konkani in Roman script.
