After calling on Curtorim Independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco earlier this week, Salcete's lone Minister, Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira is the second MLA from the taluka who will be approached by Global Konknni Forum (GKF) waging a movement to demand equal status for Konkani in Roman script.
Forum President Kennedy Afonso said the Environment Minister, representing the Nuvem constituency, has agreed to meet GKF representatives on September 27 at the South Goa Collectorate in Margao. He said a delegation of GKF will call on the MLA along with a delegation of people from the Nuvem constituency, who will present their MLA two bills in favour of Roman script to be proposed and passed in the forthcoming Assembly in December.
The first bill is to Amend the Official Language Act to include Roman script along with Devnagari, and the second one is for the introduction of Konkani in Roman script in school curriculum from 1st std to 10th std.
The GKF has thanked the MLA for the appointment, saying, “The Forum is positive that the MLA of Nuvem constituency will surely stand by the people of Nuvem constituency, and Goans, knowing fully well that his people have passed resolutions in almost all villages in his constituency, and over 50 gram Sabhas across pan Goa.”
“GKF is looking for a peaceful, positive and constructive interaction with the MLA and we are sure that he will certainly help pass these bills in the House by galvanising the support of other BJP MLAs in the government,” Kennedy added.
