The High Court of Bombay at Goa may have given wings to the dream of Punam Zore of becoming a doctor by directing the authorities to disregard excessive procedure and admit the Dhangar girl to the Goa Medical College, but the Director of Technical Education and the Dean of the Medical College are yet to decide on who is the authority to grant her admission.
A series of communication that has gone back and forth between the office of the dean and the DoT has revealed that they are yet to decide who is the authority that should grant admission to Punam. In a letter sent by the DoT to the Dean of GMC, Director Vivek B Kamat said that "there are no provisions in the prospectus of 2016-17 enabling admissions to the academic year 2016-17 to be carried out by this directorate at this juncture."
Kamat instead directed the Dean to "comply with the judgement of the High Court in the matter after confirming that the admission is in conformity with the Medical Council of India as well as the Goa University regulations regarding admissions."
However, Dean of GMC has insisted that the admitting authority of the MBBS course is the Directorate of Technical Education, which he pointed out is also a respondent in the case before the High Court which directed that the girl student be granted admission.
Speaking to The Goan, the Dean, however, expressed confidence that the girl would be admitted by Monday after certain issues were ironed out.
"The admitting authority is the DTE. We run the college. I sent my officer to meet the DTE and by Monday the girl should get admission," Dr Pradeep Naik told The Goan.
Meanwhile, Kamat refused to comment on the situation saying he wasn't aware of it.
The High Court had directed that Punam be granted admission by September 25.
