Go green: PMC distributes over 3,000 dust bins in Curti

Go green: PMC distributes over 3,000 dust bins in Curti
PONDA
The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has gifted 3,000 dust bins to the Curti-Khandepar Panchayat to collect biodegradable and degradable waste from door-to-door in its jurisdiction. The PMC has spent Rs 12 lakh to purchase the dust bins.
PMC Chairperson Dr Radhika Nayak gifted the dust bins to Curti-Khandepar Panchayat at a programme in the municipal council hall on Tuesday. Chief Officer Navnath Naik, Vice-chairperson Shantaram Kolvekar, Curti-Khandepar Sarpanch Rukma Khandeparkar, Councilor Irvin Soare
s, Sunil Desai and others were present.
It may be recalled that a couple of years ago, villagers from Khandepar had objected to PMC's move to segregate garbage at disposal site in Kerye. The residents complained that foul smell was emanating from the dumped manure (generated from the organic waste composting machines). This had forced PMC to change its place for segregation and disposal of garbage.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nayak said the new elected Curti-Khandepar Panchayat is fully supporting PMC to get rid of garbage. "We are honoured by the government for three consecutive years for managing the garbage. We will continue the same work for clean and green Ponda," Nayak said.
"The newly elected Curti-Khandepar Panchayat is fully supporting us. They are committed for the cause of clean and green Ponda. We have advised them to approach Solid Waste Management Corporation to get assistance to purchase rickshaws for door-to-door collection," Nayak said.
Speaking to The Goan, Sarpanch Rukma Khandeparkar said the panchayat has appointed a contractor to collect garbage from door-to-door in eight wards. "After they collect the garbage, we hand it over to PMC to dispose it. This is helping us to dispose the garbage," she said.
