All the tourism projects cleared by IPB fall in orange category, as per the Industries Minister s reply to a question.Red category industries are the most polluting in na ture. Of these 8 red-category projects, 3 are alcohol manufacturing industries. These include Vani Agro Farms s alcohol and beer plant at Sanguem, expansion of production capacity by Mandovi Distilleries & Breweries at Madkai Industrial Estate and United Breweries s capacity expansion at Ponda.Other red category projects, which don t fall in alcohol category, approved by IPB are Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd s storage and filling of LPG cylinders at its plant at Verna; two projects of Vedanta at Bicholim, one of them involving capacity enhancement of pig iron; MRF s expansion of tyres manufacturing capacity at Usgao and Alcon Cement Company s expansion of manufacturing facility at Surla.The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the central government has developed a criterion for rating industries based on pollution index. This index is a function of emissions (air pollutants), effluents (water pollutants), hazardous wastes generated and consumption of resources.Industries having pollution index score of 60 and above fall in red category. Industries having pollution index score of 41 to 59 fall in orange category. Industries having pollution index score of 21 to 40 fall in green category. Industries having pollution index score of 0 to 20 fall in white category.The green category projects include GSB Enterprises s new industrial unit at Canacona for manufacture of solo hydroponic machines, Sadekar Enviro Engineers s testing laboratory for checking food, pharma and environmental samples and Goa Bagayatdar Sahakari s expansion at Pissurlem Industrial Estate.
833 red-category industries in GoaIn a disclosure that could set alarm bells ringing, industries minister, Mahadev Naik quoting Goa State Pollution Control Board figures disclosed that there are 833 red-category industries already existing in Goa as of now.On account of their high pollution rate, red category industries were hotly debated in the just concluded monsoon session with MLAs like Rohan Khaunte, Vijai Sardesai, Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco and Digambar Kamat grilling the government over the issue.This list of 833 red-category industries includes companies from sectors like hospitals, quarries, automobile manufacturing, paper manufacturing, glass production, shipyard and mining.The ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC) of the central government has developed a criterion for rating industries based on pollution index. This index is a function of emissions (air pollutants), effluents (water pollutants), hazardous wastes generated and consumption of resources.The pollution index ranges from 0 to 100 with increasing value showing more pollution being created. Industries having pollution index score of 60 and above fall in red category. Industries having pollution index score of 41 to 59 fall in orange category. Industries having pollution index score of 21 to 40 fall in green category. Industries having pollution index score of 0 to 20 fall in white category.
