PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today expressed concern over the very fact how the Konkani publications are facing tough time with several shutting down due to lack of support.
Speaking at the 38th Raaj Bhaas Dis celebration, Sawant appealed people to put up a united fight to support Konkani publications. He said focus needs to be to increase readership and ensure survival of the language.
He also shared his own habit of reading Konkani newspapers, as an example of how individuals can help promote the language.
Sawant stressed on the importance of Konkani in Goa, noting the government’s decision to include the language as part examination under Goa Staff Selection Commission.
He explained that while many candidates performed well in other subjects, those who scored lower in Konkani were unable to clear it.
Sawant also pointed out that Konkani's inclusion in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution has given the language national recognition. He assured the public that the government is focused on the future of Konkani and the people of Goa, rather than just its historical roots.
Sawant shared that he has traveled across India, from Kochi to Delhi, meeting people and groups dedicated to preserving and promoting Konkani.
He acknowledged the efforts of many people outside Goa who are working hard to keep the language alive and reach a wider audience.
