Goa CM reviews monsoon preparedness; State on Orange Alert

PANAJI: Ahead of the onset of south southwest monsoon, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today directed authorities to be vigilant and prepare an effective system to minimise losses due to any unforeseen situations.

Sawant chaired a key meeting of the Goa State Disaster Management Authority at Mantralaya, Porvorim. Sawant reviewed readiness measures with officials from various government departments and the Indian Navy.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Goa from May 20 to 22, warning of very heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds across the coastal state.

In a statement posted on ‘X’, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of seamless inter-departmental coordination for effective disaster response. Sawant directed all departments to appoint dedicated Nodal Officers to ensure quick responses to any monsoon-related issues or emergencies. To support pre-monsoon activities, he approved financial allocations amounting to Rs. 35,000 for each Village Panchayat, Rs. 60,000 for B Category Municipalities, and Rs. 1,10,000 for A Category Municipalities.

Further instructions were given to the Public Works Department (PWD) to identify and address hazardous structures, including demolitions if necessary, while the Water Resources Department (WRD) was tasked with desilting rivers to mitigate flooding risks.

District Collectors were urged to maintain high vigilance and establish robust systems aimed at minimizing losses during any unforeseen events throughout the monsoon period.
