A major tragedy was narrowly averted on Sunday when a segment of the under-construction Porvorim elevated corridor reportedly collapsed from its girder near the Guirim junction, causing significant traffic congestion along the busy Mapusa“Panaji route. On the very day, I was driving under an under-construction flyover along the Dabolim Airport“Verna road when a massive concrete segment was being put in place by a huge crane. A thought crossed my mind: what if the concrete structure falls on my car? I said a small prayer. It seems necessary to pray that nothing untoward happens as one drives along these under-construction flyovers. Now, with heavy rains being predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), things could only get worse. With rainwater seeping in, the sturdiness of the concrete structure could be compromised. It would be in the fitness of things to keep on hold the construction of all flyovers till the end of the southwest monsoon.
