Goa has emerged as the top State in the country for completing final reports of cases registered under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act within the mandatory time limit of 60 days.
Goa which also takes the credit for introducing the first legislation in India called ‘Goa Children’s Act 2003’ to protect and promote the rights of children, has ranked second among all States/Union Territories for complying with the criteria laid down by the central government.
Director General of Police Jaspal Singh said that the State police filed final reports in 78.4 per cent of cases whereas Daman has done so in 82 per cent of cases.
“Goa is second in India only behind Daman and Diu in compliance with the statutory mandate of ensuring filing of final report in the stipulated period of 60 days. Pertinently, the compliance of this statutory requirement is reviewed at a very high level by the Union Home Minister and is an important agenda at Zonal Council meetings which are chaired by the Union Home Minister,” he said.
In 2018, the law was amended to ensure that the charge sheet and trial in POCSO cases are filed in time to ensure the deterrence of sexual violence against Children.
Singh said that the department could achieve the goal due to close monitoring of POCSO cases by senior officers at the headquarters level.
Even the State Chief Secretary reviews the important aspect of cases registered under the Act, he added.
