MARGAO
With Municipal elections round the corner to be followed by the 2022 Assembly battle, former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin descended on the Fatorda grounds on Saturday to strongly bat for Goa Forward Party. He urged the residents of Chandrawado to strengthen their MLA’s hands to take him and his regional party forward and to make him the state’s Chief Minister.
The former India Captain descended on Chandrawado, the area with a significant Muslim presence, with the Fatorda MLA in tow to inaugurate a joggers park and gymnasium in the area.
“Vijai Sardesai has been working for the people. Don’t put pressure on him, but get your works done one at a time. No batsman can bat under pressure,” he told the people.
Recalling his stint as MP, the ace cricketer said elected representatives should be given time to work for the people. “Vijai has been working for the people. It’s time the people from Chandrawado move forward and also take forward the Goa Forward and the MLA,” he said.
In his address, the Fatorda MLA said he would never forget the Muslim community for their contribution to his election as MLA. “Your interest is our interest. We will always protect your interest. I will never forget your contribution when you made me the MLA,” he said.
He urged the people of Chandrawado not to believe in promises of jobs made by political parties. “The government has become bankrupt. They cannot give jobs anymore. Don’t fall prey to false promises,” he said.
Asserting that he and the GF-controlled Margao council had gone all out to support the Muslim brethren during the CAA and NRC agitation, Sardesai said the civic body had given all-out support to hold protests in the city.
Terming Azharuddin as a symbol of humility, Sardesai said youngsters should emulate the former India captain to become big in life. “Cricketers are next to God, But, here is a cricketer who has no pride in him,” he said.
