Goa Glorious: Legacy of freedom fighter Dr John Carvalho

Dr John Carvalho, born on May 25, 1910, in Veroda-Cuncolim, Salcete, was a prominent freedom fighter whose legacy is preserved at the ‘Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa - The Land, The Struggle, The People’ in Sinquerim. A BA graduate and homoeopathy practitioner, he was an active participant in India’s freedom movement from 1929 and later in the liberation of Goa, Daman and Diu. As a member of the National Congress Goa (NCG), he served as its President during the 4th Session in Londa in 1950. He addressed meetings, contributed patriotic writings to the Bombay and Calcutta press, and was arrested in 1951, later acquitted in 1953. He was a member of the Bombay Provincial Congress Committee (BPCC) from 1954–57 and joint secretary of the Goan Political Convention in Bombay from 1958–61. He also contributed to the co-operative movement and was honoured by the Government of Goa, Daman and Diu on June 18, 1982.
