South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes has said the government-run hospitals in Goa, including the South Goa district hospital, can perform better than AIIMS if the hospitals are upgraded with doctors, manpower and equipment.
The MP led a delegation of citizens to South Goa district hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rajendra Borkar to find out the shortcomings at the district hospital and how to tide over the shortages.
After the meeting, Viriato told the media in the presence of district Congress president Savio D’Silva and Congress leader Savio Coutinho that the doctors, nurses and staff are not in a position to cope with the work since they are all overloaded. “They are all putting their best efforts to provide the best service to the patients. But, they need to be given additional manpower and equipment,” he said.
Stressing on the need to go from a vital to a desirable level in offering medical services to the patients, the MP also underscored the need to tone up and strengthen the facilities at the Primary, Urban and Community health centres to reduce the load on the district and sub-district hospital.
“I will take up the issue of upgradation of the South Goa district hospital with Health Minister Vishwajit Rane. If my services are required, I will take up the matter of upgradation of health services in Goa with the centre,” he added.
The MP also called for enhancing the security at the district hospital after the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. “Right now, the security at the district hospital takes care of the patients and visitors to the hospital. We need security to protect the doctors and nurses and staff in the hospital,” he added.
