Goa in Covid grip; six dead, 927 new cases; Positivity rate touches another high

Goa on Friday experienced the steepest single-day spike in Covid cases since the onset of the pandemic last year with a total of 927 new cases being detected from among the 3,189 samples tested. The daily positivity rate touched 29 per cent, yet another high. 

The total active Covid cases in Goa presently stand at 6,321. 

Since the start of April, a massive spike of 7,195 new Covid cases has been experienced in the State. So far, a total of 65,499 Covid cases have been confirmed in Goa since last year. 

Parallel to this, the death toll also rose to six on Friday taking the total Covid victim count of the State to 868.

Out of the six deaths, five were recorded at GMC, Bambolim and one at South Goa District Hospital, Margao.

As per the information released by the Directorate of Health Services, among the five deaths reported at GMC, two patients expired in less than six hours of being admitted at the hospital. 

The first deceased patient, a 44 year-old man from Moira, was admitted as a medico-legal case and was found to be Covid positive after he was wheeled into a surgical unit. “The exact cause of death will be available only after the postmortem,” DHS stated.

The second patient, a 51 year-old woman from Belgaum, was symptomatic with cough and fever for six days and had tested positive for Covid-19 six days ago. “She was being monitored under home isolation. However, the patient developed breathlessness and desaturation and expired within the two hours of arrival at GMC,” said the DHS release.

The other three patients who passed away at GMCH are a 60 year-old man from Sindhudurg, a 48 year-old woman from Guirim and a 46 year-old man from Thane.

The sixth patient, who expired at SGDH, was brought in respiratory failure and succumbed to Covid-19 infection despite resuscitation.

Presently, cases have peaked in several areas across the State and almost every health centre is struggling to monitor the high number of active cases under its jurisdiction. 

Among the areas with over 200 active cases are Urban Health Centre Margao (725), Primary Health Centre porvorim (589), UHC Mapusa (426), PHC Ponda (417), UHC Panaji (414), UHC Vasco (370), PHC Cortalim (345) and PHC Chimbel (228). Several other health centres which are monitoring over 100 actove cases include Community Health Centre Bicholim, CHC Sakhali, CHC Pernem, PHC Aldona, PHC Corlim, PHC Siolim, PHC Cansaulim, PHC Chinchinim, PHC Loutolim, PHC Shiroda and PHC Navelim.
