Claiming that health facilities available in the State were one of the best in the country, Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant on Monday said Goa was the only State where surgeries related to the heart were carried out for free.

“From the Goa Medical College and Hospital to the sub-centres in the villages, the health facilities we provide are the best. Not only for our people but people coming from outside too are offered the same facilities,” Sawant said.

“No other State in the country offers free angiography or angioplasty as is being offered in GMC,” he added.

The chief minister was addressing a gathering during the laying of the foundation stone of the extension of Candolim Primary Health Centre.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, Waste Management Minister and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, Vice Chairman of GSIDC and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, Candolim Sarpanch Blaize Fernandes, ZP and sarpanch and panch members of other surrounding villages were present.

Continuing, the chief minister said apart from the locals the health services ensure that tourists and labourers are offered primary health service in the State.

He said while doing so the government has been working hard to provide the best infrastructure in all the 40 constituencies in the State.

“From Pernem to Canacona and Valpoi to Dabolim our efforts to provide the best infra have been going on from 2012 till now,” he said.

He said the government was also trying to provide quality medicines in the State.

Stating that the government was trying to provide the best facilities, the chief minister also said it was working to shift to new district hospitals wherever possible.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the hospital attached to the Candolim PHC will be one of the most unique ones with a focus on emergency services.

“When accidents on roads or even drowning cases happen along this coastal belt the first health service will be the Candolim PHC. We need to provide them with the best casualty facilities,” Rane said.

He said the government has proposed to construct another health centre in Saligao which will reduce the pressure on the Candolim PHC.

The health minister said his department was working to start the South Goa District Hospital before April this year.

“The CM has asked us to shift to the new South Goa District Hospital. So even if it has to be in a phased manner we will begin operations in the new district hospital in Margao by April,” Rane said.

As per plans, the Candolim PHC will have separate wards and zones such as emergency services, outpatient clinics, diagnostic centres, operation theatres, patient wards, gynaecology, health office, reception etc.

The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation is the executing agency.
