PANAJI: Power Minister Ramakrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar today admitted Goa's failure on green energy generation by stating that the State failed to achieve its 10MW of solar power target set for the ongoing financial year.
Speaking at the training program under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijlee Yojana, Dhavalikar also said that the State even failed to meet the 150MW target set by 2020, thus showing our poor performance at the National level.
He said that of the set target of 10 MW of solar power this year, we have not been able to reach even 1 MW.
Dhavalikar emphasized the urgency of meeting renewable energy targets, in line with Prime Minister Modi's vision of generating 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
Dhavalikar pointed out that delays in processing solar applications under the rooftop scheme is hampering progress.
He stressed that these delays must end to ensure every household has access to clean, green energy.
"I have directed officials to process Surya Ghar applications within 7 days. Goa must move faster to take full advantage of renewable energy," he added.
In addition, the government has begun scrutinizing forms for the Free Solar Rooftop Scheme under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
Over 3,500 forms have been reviewed, and those who qualify will receive a “letter of offer”. Dhavalikar added, “Our officers will be trained in the next two days on how to inspect and address the needs across Talukas in Goa.”
The Minister also emphasized the national energy strategy, with PM Modi's focus on achieving 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030.
"By 2030, India will generate 1000 GW of power, with nuclear and renewable energy playing a crucial role. This is part of the Prime Minister's vision, and every household, especially in Goa, must be a part of this transformation."
In addition to solar energy, the government is offering incentives to drive the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Dhavalikar pointed out that discounts and duty reductions on EVs would make clean energy transportation more affordable and accessible for the public.
Dr. Tripura Thakur, Director of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), also emphasised the importance of sustainable energy practices. "Nothing is free, and it is essential to understand the importance of electricity. Electricity should not be politicized, and the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijlee Yojana will eliminate freebies. We need to move ahead with sustainability."
