India ‘may’ accept foreign aid for Kerala
NEW DELHI: As the row over foreign aid for flood-ravaged Kerala escalated, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had in 2016 suggested assistance offered as a goodwill gesture “may” be accepted by India, bolstering the stand taken by Chief Minister Pinarayi there is no blanket ban. Union minister K J Alphons on Thursday appealed for an “one time exception” to the 14-year convention to allow overseas assistance, notably from the UAE.
Carmona dispatches 35 boxes of aid
PANAJI: Its not just members of the Malyalee community in Goa who are collaborating to collect aid material and dispatch it to Kerala. Goans and local communities across the State’s rural landscape too are doing their bit to pool in resources and dispatch boxes and boxes of aid material like sanitary pads, diapers and packed dry food material.
One such village is Carmona which over the last two-three days united under the aegis of local trust ‘Cross Boys of Carmona’ and handed over 35 boxes of sanitary pads, diapers, towels, cotton packets, mosquito repellents, under-garments for children and adults, toothbrushes and pastes, antiseptic liquid bottles, Dettol soaps and electrolyte re-hydration solutions.
The material was handed over on Thursday at the Indian Navy’s warehouse in Vasco where it was received by Mr Lalu Abraham of the All India Malyalee Association.
Cross Boys of Carmona, who recently registered themselves as a Charitable Trust under its President, Martin D’Costa, took the initiative to collect these toiletries donated by co-villagers and residents of the neighbouring villages on the Salcete coast.
