While many parts of Goa are suffering from acute water scarcity, the government celebrated its accomplishment at the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting claiming to be the first State in achieving 100 per cent tap water supply.
“I am proud to announce that under your guidance and leadership (referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi) my State Goa is the first State in the country to achieve 100 per cent tapped water supply for all the households. We have achieved the ambitious target of ‘Har Ghar Nal’ in March 2022,” Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said while addressing the PM-chaired meeting in Delhi.
His statement comes at a time when several parts of Goa have been left without water for days and tanker operators, if not all, are taking advantage of the situation by either supplying unhygienic water or demanding exorbitant fees per trip.
Sawant further added that under the “Amrit Sarovar Mission”, the State has designated 164 water bodies as Amrit Sarovars and completed their rejuvenation. Further, for quality check of these Amrit Sarovars, the government will designate this task to all the State government officers to inspect its quality. “Each officer will be assigned one Sarovar,” he said.
GOA TO INTERLINK DAMS: The Goa government is also working on interlinking river storage dams in the State. In the first instance, six major dams at Nirankal, Cajumol, Tatodi and Mhadei rivers will be taken up to store about 20.91 TMC of raw water. “This effort will be key to sustainable economic development while also restoring ecological balance in the State,” Sawant said.
