Goacan demands repainting of pedestrian crossing at KTC Panaji

THE GOAN NETWORK | MARCH 31, 2021, 12:39 AM IST

PANAJI
Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) has demanded the repainting of the pedestrian crossing inside the Panaji KTC bus stand which connects the departure point for buses proceeding to Dona Paula and Taleigao, cutting across the bus bays under the green shade up to the last arrival point. Pointing out that this pedestrian crossing provided a safe passage for passengers proceeding to the bus stand complex from the entry bays, GOACAN states that over the years it has worn out.

GOACAN coordinator, Roland Martins states that this was brought to the notice of the KTCL officials at various meetings of the North Goa District Road Safety Committee, however, there has been no action from the KTCL and presently passengers are having a difficult time walking in between the buses, thereby putting their life and limb at risk.

GOACAN states that there was a tragic accident in 2018 wherein two passengers died and three were injured as one bus dashed into another bus. This could have been avoided if the pedestrian crossing was painted, but even after this incident there has been no response from the KTCL, alleges GOACAN.

Now besides a huge kiosk, a waste bin and other boards have become obstacles on this path purely due to the lack of this pedestrian crossing being painted. This has resulted in pedestrians using the ramped passage meant for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. As the land on which KTCL operates the bus stand belongs to the Directorate of Transport, GOACAN has requested the office to undertakes the repainting of this pedestrian crossing. This action will reduce the number of road fatalities in 2021.

GOACAN has sent the copies of the letter to the Chief Secretary, Transport Secretary, Secretary for Civil Supplies and GAD, respective District Magistrates, Director of Social Welfare, Fire and Emergency Services, Commissioner CCP, SP Traffic Police and Assistant Director Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs.
