GOACAN, DRAG demand safety of pedestrians at Panaji bus stand

ROAD SAFETY MONTH

PANAJI

As part of the ongoing Road Safety Month, Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) has been advocating for the safety of pedestrians and as part of this drive GOACAN reviewed the situation of pedestrian safety in the Panaji KTC bus stand along with the Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG) on January 3.

“We found that there is absence of proper signage at the entrance of the city bus service area, the main zebra crossing has not been repainted and that no proper passage for the disabled pedestrians is available,” stated Roland Martins, coordinator, GOACAN. Martins further mentions that Aveline De Sa, president DRAG personally walked the entire stretch from the entrance of the bus stand from the city bus bays till the main building complex of the bus stand and noted all the difficulties faced by the pedestrians who are disabled.

Martins and De Sa, both took note of the huge kiosk under construction which is blocking the free passage of the pedestrians thereby putting extra pressure on the ramp passage meant for the disabled persons. “DRAG will submit a detailed representation on the issues noted at the KTC bus stand and its recommendations to the District Collector, director of Transport, director Fire & Emergency Services, chairman Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited and Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities,” stated Aveline De Sa.

Meanwhile the deputy collector (revenue) North Goa district Veera V Nayak has directed the Tiswadi Mamlatdar to inquire and take appropriate action on the GOACAN representation to North Goa District Collector on the obstruction created to passenger passage due the construction of the huge kiosk at the Panaji KTC bus stand. The letter was sent on January 22 this year and received on the same day.
