The joy of Goan Dental surgeon, Marvin Cota saw no bounds on Thursday when news trickled in that his monobloc dental implant invention has won an European patent.

The patent for Cota’s invention was granted a patent by the European Patent Office headquartered at Munich, Germany was promptly intimated on Thursday.

Cota had stunned a legion of his loyal clientele when he suddenly gave up a more than two decade long practice some four years ago and shut down his clinic in Tonca-Caranzalem although the clinic in the port town of Vasco continued to be run by his wife Shirley, also a dentist.

But the dentistry wizard had much bigger plans and on Thursday he’s proudly lived the dream with his monobloc dental implant invention passed some of the most stringent tests it was put through to gain the European Patent.

According to Cota, his design of monobloc dental implants is the first of its kind in the world.

“This invention has the potential to overcome most of shortcomings of current day root form dental implants by distributing the biting forces in a equilibrium,” Cota told The Goan by e-mail.

Its use on patients will involve a simple procedure without any surgical flaps. There will also be no stitches making the procedure almost completely painless.

Cota is an alumni of the Goa Dental College, Bambolim and graduated in early 1990s. After earning a masters, he launched his private practice first in the port town of Vasco and a few years later opened a branch-clinic on the outskirts of the capital Panaji at Tonca-Caranzalem.

Some four years ago, he suddenly gave up his over two-decade long roaring practice in Vasco and Panaji to dedicate himself to his big dream and focused on research in design and making dental implants.

His decision to quit practice may have certainly cost him a lot but his patience and belief in himself has for sure paid off and more with Thursday’s intimation from Munich that his invention has won an European patent. And, his sense of achievement could soar even higher once the monobloc dental implant actually begins to find favour with other dentists and benefits both patients and dentistry, worldwide.
