The traditional “Koppel” and Goan culture were in full display as the Goan diaspora celebrated the feast of St John the Baptist with great reverence and jubilation in Adelaide, Australia on June 24 for the second successive year.
After a few devotees of Saint John the Baptist got together and successfully celebrated the feast last year, this year saw an increase in numbers.
The feast Mass was celebrated by Fr Santiago Fernandes (SFX) and Fr Eldridge D’souza (OFM Capuchin) at 12 noon in the St Francis of Assisi Parish, Newton, a parish managed by the Capuchin Order of the Australian Province.
The mission and life of St John the Baptist was highlighted in the homily, while the melodious choir of devotees of St John the Baptist resonated in the church.
After the Mass, there was a get together in the Parish Hall and nearly 150 devotes of St John the Baptist gathered to celebrate the feast of their beloved saint.
People from different parts of Adelaide came to join in the festive celebration. Angelo Fernandes was the main organiser at the event which showcased unity and humility, the values Saint John the Baptist.
People were seen wearing the traditional “Koppel” creating a nostalgic feeling, while the buffet was home cooked and the entertainment included plenty of games, foot-tapping music and bingo.
It was an opportunity to meet new families and welcome the new migrants to Adelaide and Australia in general. It also showcased an environment of living the rich traditions and devotion as well as of love, co-operation and fellowship.
