Goan Labour trio secures Swindon Council seats

LONDON

It was a clean sweep for Goan candidates of the Labour Party contesting elections to vacant seats at the Swindon Borough Council in the UK on Thursday, as all three candidates won in their respective wards after counting of votes ended on Friday.

The winning candidates were Domingos Seby Dias (Central Ward) who hails from Panaji, Ana Fernandes (Rodbourne Cheney) who hails from Cansaulim, and Princia Fernandes (Gorse Hill & Pinehurst), who hails from Mapusa.

The Goan candidates had contested elections to the vacant seats at the Swindon Council in a bid to actively participate in local decision-making processes and get involved in activities and issues involving the community.

Swindon Deputy Mayor Imtiyaz Shaikh, who hails from Vasco, was elated over the success of all three Labour candidates of Goan origin.

“Delighted that Labour Swindon have been elected to run Swindon Council again. We are humbled by this kind of support and committed to creating the better, greener, and more equitable Swindon that its citizens deserve,” said Shaikh.

“Fantastic to see so many improvements and a mandate for the Swindon Plan. Furthermore, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who voted for and supported Ana, Seby, and Princia, our Labour Goan candidates. I assure that all of us will keep tirelessly working for the betterment of Swindon.”

DOMINGOS DIAS

Domingos Dias said he was deeply humbled and honoured to be the newly elected representative.

“I extend my sincere thanks to my family for their unwavering support, encouragement, and sacrifices throughout this campaign,” said Domingos, in a message to the electorate.

“To all my associates, volunteers, and supporters who worked tirelessly by my side, thank you for your dedication and commitment to our shared vision. It is because of your hard work and passion that we stand here today, on this journey together.”

“As your elected representative, I want to assure you that I am fully committed to serving the needs and interests of our community. I pledge to listen to your concerns, your rights, and work tirelessly to address the issues that matter most to each and every one of you.”

“Together, we will strive to build a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous Swindon. I am confident that, with your support, we can achieve great things together,” Domingos added.

Ana Fernandes said she was deeply grateful that people have put their trust in her.

“I am humbled by all their support. It hasn’t been easy but all the hard work has been worthwhile. We’ve got an exceptional team behind us so I’m very excited to get going,” said Ana.

PRINCIA FERNANDES

Princia Fernandes said she was beyond grateful for confidence of voters in her ability to lead and be one of their voices in the Council.

“It is an honour for me to be in this position as this will be my platform to help and be a voice for my community,” said Princia, in a message to the electorate.

“I’ve been working alongside my father (Paulo Fernandes), a union representative and senior labour party member for over 16 years for the working class people in Swindon and Wiltshire. I’ve always had the guidance and support from him. I’m truly grateful for all the support my father has given me and I know he will continue to do so.”

“Special thanks to my amazing supporters and campaigners, my friends and families and our fantastic MP candidate Will Stone for North Swindon and North Swindon Labour Party.”

“You’ll have a committed, hands-on person who you will see out all year around, working with the community to deliver much needed change.”
