Many Goan motorists encountered the tough side of law enforcement agencies in Belagavi, when the Belagavi Traffic Police booked 15,176 cases in a major ongoing drive against traffic violations.
Belagavi Police have registered 15,176 cases since February 6, including a record 613 cases booked by a senior police officer from his blackberry phone on a single day. Cases against several Goans too were booked for overspeeding and breaking the signals.
In a major drive that commenced following the directives of the district judiciary, the police have also collected an amount of over Rs 15 lakh in fines.
Weary about the rise in traffic indiscipline, the district judiciary had pulled up the Belagavi police for the traffic chaos and failing traffic standards in the city. Principal District and Sessions Judge R J Satish Singh who had directed the city police department and civic authorities over the rising number of accidents and incidents of violations of traffic rule in the city had set a target of registering at least 22,000 cases of violations of helmet rule and other traffic rules.
Meanwhile, Goans visiting Belagavi need to remain alert as the city police have also booked several cases against Goans during the week-long drive.
“We have found that people of Goa are either overspeeeding or they break the traffic signals. Many Goan vehicles are found parked at wrong places,” PI Mushafiri told The Goan.
Intensifying its campaign against violation of traffic rules, the city police from February 6 started imposing penalty and booking cases against bikers without helmet and those flouting the traffic rules. The police have swung into action forming special squads to nab the violators under the direction of City Police Commissioner T G Krishna Bhatt.
Giving details about the record, DCP Reddy said fine is being imposed on the helmetless bike riders, meterless auto-rickshaws, wrong parking, overspeeding, etc.
“On February 8, PI (traffic) North Javeed Mushafiri booked 613 offences from his blackberry phone provided by the police department to record and register traffic violations. We checked the records from all the cities and found that this is the highest record of traffic violence cases booked by any police officer,” DCP Reddy said congratulating PI Mushafiri.
