Goans meet in Swindon, decry remarks against St Xavier The event ‘Enough Is Enough’ was organised at the Broadgreen Basketball Court in Broad Street.

LONDON

Goans staged a peaceful protest meeting in Swindon, UK, on Sunday afternoon to denounce the provocative comments by Gautam Khattar against St Francis Xavier during a recent function in Vasco.

The event ‘Enough Is Enough’, organised at the Broadgreen Basketball Court in Broad Street, began with a prayer in Konkani by Vina Pegado, followed by the Konkani hymn ‘Sant Francis Xavier’.

In his speech, former Swindon Mayor of Goan origin and sitting councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh described Goans as peace-loving people who have been living together in peace and harmony with all faiths.

“However, there have been some elements who come and disrupt Goans by making false statements on religious grounds in order to disturb the peace in Goa. Those who speak against any religion and hurt the sentiments of the people should be severely punished,” said Shaikh.

Swindon councillor Domingos Dias said the recent derogatory statements against St Francis Xavier, a symbol of faith, compassion, and service, were an insult not just to Goans, but to millions across the world.

“This protest is peaceful because we are a peaceful people. Goa’s soul is built on harmony. That is who we are. That is what we brought with us to Swindon. We will not accept hate speech against St Francis Xavier. We will not accept attacks on any religion ” not today, not tomorrow. We will not let anyone divide us here in the UK, just as we do not allow it back home in Goa. When one faith is disrespected, all faiths are weakened,” said Dias.

In her speech, Swindon councillor Anabelle Pegado reflected on how Goans were taught to live in harmony, irrespective of religion.

Other speakers at the peaceful protest meeting included Elcy Falcao, Santan Souza, and others, while Anthony (Shingu) Fernandes compered the meeting.
